Brigittine Carmelite Rosary (Sorrowful Mysteries)

The First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden

Let us contemplate in this mystery how our Lord Jesus was so afflicted for us in the Garden of Gethsemane, that His body was bathed in a bloody sweat, which ran trickling down in great drops upon the ground. May we sincerely lament our sins which caused this great agony.

The Second Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar

Let us contemplate in this mystery how our Lord Jesus Christ was most cruelly scourged for our sins. May God grant us the grace to purify our minds and bodies and control our unruly passions.

The Third Sorrowful Mystery: The Crowning with Thorns

Let us contemplate in this mystery how they crowned our Lord with sharp thorns, and saluted Him in derision as King of the Jews. May we not seek the flatteries and vanities of this world, but rather have the courage to seek only the approval of God.

The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery: The Carrying of the Cross

Let us contemplate in this mystery how our Lord, being sentenced to die, bore with great patience the cross which was laid upon Him for His greater torment. May we imitate our Lord’s great patience in bearing our own crosses and tribulations in life.

The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery: The Crucifixion

Let us contemplate in this mystery how our Savior, having come to Calvary, was stripped of His clothes, and His hands and feet were cruelly nailed to the cross in the presence of His most afflicted Mother. As He prayed for His executioners, so let us forgive those who injure and persecute us.

The Sixth Sorrowful Mystery: The Body of Jesus in the Arms of Mary

Let us contemplate in this mystery the miserable desolation which Mary endured as she held the bloody and lifeless body of Christ. Her innocent son, sacrificed for our sins and laid upon the altar of her arms. May we with open arms accept the ocean of Mercy which Christ opened up for us.
